18 Apr 3 Things You Should Know About The New NJ Marijuana Bill
NJ Marijuana smokers may be in for some good news.
NJ Marijuana users may be able to buy and grow the plant in their homes sooner rather than later.
Marijuana is already legal in 9 states and Washington D.C. Of those states, only Vermont and Washington D.C. have barred sales for recreational purposes.
New Jersey may be next in legalizing marijuana.
The debate on the legalization of marijuana may be getting a head start due to the inauguration of Governor Phil Murphy. Our new governor has stated that he will sign a bill, if he estimates the bill can make it through the state Legislature.
Given this, here are 3 things you should know about this new bill.
- ABOUT THE BILL
This new bill for NJ Marijuana is not the same bill that has received some attention from last year. Key changes to this new bill include:
- Allowing recreational weed sales through dispensaries.
- Allowing individuals to grow a certain amount of cannabis at home.
- Legalization of possession and personal use of up to 1 ounce of nj marijuana for those over the age of 21.
- A State tax imposition on nj marijuana.
- State agency assigned to regulate nj marijuana.
- DOES THIS MEAN I CAN SMOKE WHERE EVER?
The answer to this question is NO.
Just as cigarettes are legal, smokers still cannot smoke cigarettes anywhere they feel. Smoking marijuana will have similar restrictions. We can anticipate that smokers will be barred from smoking in public parks and other public places where smoking in general is prohibited.
- CAN I SMOKE IN MY CAR?
Even if marijuana is eventually legalized, you still will not be able operate a vehicle under the influence. Just like the law against drinking and driving; smoking and driving will also carry penalties. Driving under the Influence (“DUI”) laws STILL apply.
REMEMBER, marijuana is not legal yet in the state of New Jersey so, do not get ahead of yourself. If you have been charged with a marijuana related offense, DO NOT FEAR. Call us now at (201) 792-3333 for your FREE no obligation consultation.
