10 THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT YOUR NEW JERSEY DRIVER’S LICENSE AND THE POINT SYSTEM

1.       THE STATE OF NEW JERSEY RECORDS ALL OF YOUR MOVING VIOLATIONS AND REPORTED ACCIDENTS. THIS IS RECORDED FOR THE LIFETIME OF YOUR DRIVING HISTORY.

2.       YOUR DRIVING HISTORY IS RECORDED AND AVAILABLE IN A DOCUMENT CALLED A DRIVER HISTORY ABSTRACT. YOU MAY REQUEST A COPY OF YOUR ABSTRACT THROUGH THE NEW JERSEY MOTOR VEHICLE COMMISSION.

3.       YOU CANNOT EXPUNGE ANYTHING FROM YOUR DRIVER ABSTRACT.

4.       THE NEW JERSEY POINTS SCHEDULE IS AVAILABLE ONLINE AT https://www.state.nj.us/mvc/license/points-schedule.htm

5.       IF YOU GET SIX OR MORE POINTS WITHIN THREE (3) YEARS ON YOUR CURRENT DRIVING RECORD, YOU WILL BE ASSESSED A SURCHARGE OF $150.00 FOR THE FIRST SIX POINTS AND $25.00 FOR EACH ADDITIONAL POINT.

6.       IF YOU GET 12 OR MORE POINTS ON YOUR CURRENT DRIVING RECORD, YOUR LICENSE WILL BE SUSPENDED AND YOU SHOULD RECEIVE A NOTICE OF A SCHEDULED SUSPENSION BY MAIL.

7.       POINTS ON YOUR LICENSE MAY LEAD TO AN INCREASE IN YOUR INSURANCE PREMIUMS.

8.       ALTHOUGH YOU CANNOT REMOVE ANYTHING FROM YOUR DRIVING HISTORY ABSTRACT, YOU MAY BE ENTITLED TO A POINT DEDUCTION.

9.    YOU MAY BE ELIGIBLE FOR A TWO (2) POINT DEDUCTION ONCE EVERY FIVE (5) YEARS BY TAKING A STATE-APPROVED, NEW JERSEY DEFENSIVE DRIVING COURSE. THERE ARE MANY STATE-APPROVED ONLINE DEFENSIVE DRIVING COURSES.

10.  GOING ONE (1) YEAR WITH NO VIOLATIONS OR SUSPENSIONS WILL RESULT IN A THREE (3) POINT DEDUCTION.
